Trick Endings essays

Trick Endings essays In the Tell Tale Heart, we are not led to the twist at the ending differently. Poe uses the element of terror throughout the entire story. He does this first by having a nameless narrator. This creates a sense of mystery. Then the narrator states that he loves the old man, but his eye was irritating him to the point he plotted the old mans murder as a result. However, he makes this statement in a calm and collective voice. He then says that he is not crazy; he says this repeatedly, which leads the reader to believe that he is. The fact that the narrator is completely calm when he murders the old man and that he is pleased at what a good job he did makes the reader question even more the narrators sanity. When the narrator invites the cop in as a way of boasting, Poe adds the sound of the old mans heartbeat to add the element of suspense. The narrator begins to think to himself, screaming inside himself, and silently yell at the police officer for mocking him. it is the soun d of the old mans heartbeat that drives the narrator to confess. If the heartbeat and the narrator speaking to himself was not added to the ending, then the reader would not be led to think that he would not get away with the murder. Poe is famous for this particular style of writing. In the Monkeys Paw, you are led to the twist at the ending differently. You are led to believe that the parents would wish back their son and live happily ever after. Jacobs uses the element of coincidence and mystery tied together. Mr. White wishes for 200,000 pounds, and he gets his wish in an unexpected way. His wish was granted when he was paid compensation after Herbert, his son, was killed in a factory accident. Mrs. White then demands that Mr. White wish for the son to return from the dead. At this point the reader would assume that Mr. White would wish for his son and the story would have a pleasant ending. However,...

Modern Chinese Engagements Wed Love and Tradition

Modern Chinese Engagements Wed Love and Tradition In the past, Chinese parents and matchmakers arranged marriage engagements. The engagement consisted of six courtesies: a  marriage proposal, asking for names, praying for good fortune, sending betrothal gifts, sending invitations, and welcoming the bride. Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me a Match A family would hire a matchmaker, and the matchmaker would go to another family’s home to seek a proposal. Then both families would consult a fortune teller who analyzed the man and woman’s birth dates, times, names, and other vital information. If they were deemed compatible, a marriage deal would be brokered. Betrothal gifts would be exchanged and a wedding planned. While some families may still opt for an arranged marriage or set their children up with their friends’ children, most modern Chinese find their own soul mates and decide when to get married. The man often presents the woman with a diamond engagement ring. But many Chinese engagement traditions including the exchange of betrothal gifts, a bridal dowry, and consultation with a fortune teller remain important today. Betrothal Gifts as a Tradition Once a couple decides to get married, the groom’s family customarily sends gifts to the bride’s family. These commonly include symbolic foods and cakes. In some provinces, however, tradition  dictates that the groom must give his future in-laws money for the privilege of marrying their daughter, often in excess of $10,000. Once the bride’s family accepts the gifts, the wedding cannot be called off lightly. Bridal Dowry as a Tradition In the old days, the bridal dowry consisted of the gifts a bride brought to her husband’s home after marriage. Once a woman married, she left her parents home and became part of her husband’s family. Her principal responsibility shifted to her husband’s family. The value of her dowry determined a woman’s status in her new household. In modern times, a dowry serves a more practical purpose in helping the couple get set up in their new home, where they usually reside independently of the grooms parents. A brides dowry may include a tea set, bedding, furniture, bathroom accessories, small appliances, and her personal clothing and jewelry. A Fortune Teller Consultation Before confirming an engagement, the families consult a fortune teller to ensure the couples compatibility. The fortune teller analyzes their names, birth dates, birth years, and birth times to determine if they can live in harmony. Once the fortune teller gives the OK, traditionalists seal the engagement with three matchmakers and six proofs: an abacus, a measuring vessel, a ruler, a pair of scissors, a set of scales, and a mirror Finally, the families consult a Chinese almanac to determine an auspicious day for the wedding. Some modern Chinese brides and grooms choose to announce their engagement and deliver their wedding invitations with traditional double happiness cakes, though many others forego this tradition in favor of a standard card sent through the mail.

Gender Revolution in the Latin America Research Paper - 1

Gender Revolution in the Latin America - Research Paper Example Preservation of status quo in Latin politics and economic expansion provided social justice amidst the political crisis. Few revolutions contributed to significant political changes in the 20th century owing to major alterations in economic and social matters. Â  Revolution in the Latin America States arose subsequently to two major occasions which include the Mexican Revolution and the World War I. Despite other nations maintaining the status quo through this major events, the Great War caused the realignment of economies of nations and disrupted the economies of the region. Prior to the war, Europe exported Latin American agrarian revolution products and, as a result, demand for the products kept rising. After the World Wars, the Latin American economy slowed and unending political unrest made a better deal of the region. Heavy and uncontrolled immigration led to alarming rates of population growth. As a result, the urban regions experienced high rates of congestion and therefore increased social problems. As If that did not serve to destabilize the countries, the region arose to the emergence of a newer and dominant superpower, the United States. Â  Unrelenting economic problems in Latin America brought down military governments to the control of the civilians. The resultant human torture and massacres and political killings in the region grabbed the international attention which in turn reinforced the concept of natural law in human rights. However, differences in political opinions and cultural opinions made the enforcement of the law are quite hard due to the different interpretation of components of human rights. Changes in the Latin America society took place gradually over the 20th century. The changes took place because ethnicity, economic class, and gender remain influential. Â  The status of women and their rights changed over time in three phases in the fight for political power.

ODEs and Linear Algebra Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

ODEs and Linear Algebra - Coursework Example by differential equations of first or higher order that must be generally or particularly solved to find a certain equation that would potentially describe the behaviour of an object or a particle based on its variable property or set of properties. This notion applies to an aspect in engineering that deals with the task of analysing vessel leaks as in formulating a mathematical model for a leaking process being undergone by a substance that flows out of a crack or fault in the tank so that the flow rate correspondingly affects the depth of such fluid in the tank. The scenario could be interpreted either for a varying volume or a varying liquid depth with time which is often assumed proportional to each other in a differential equation (MIT, n.d., 1). Use your own examples to show how to solve one first order, linear, ordinary differential equation where an integrating factor is needed in the solution. Explain why the integrating factor works and when should this method be used. *The method of using ‘integrating factor’ renders the differential equation exact so that in this form, it would be more convenient to evaluate the differential equation and arrive at the solution. Use your own examples to explain to a first year Engineering student what are homogeneous linear equations and where they are found in engineering. Also explain the analytical methods that can solve them. By the term ‘homogeneous’, linear equations are illustrated in the simple sense of merely being composed of homogeneous differential terms, bearing derivatives of one variable type with respect to another on one side of the equation while the other side of the equation is kept as zero or one with constant term rather than another type of variable. This may be generally exemplified as (Dawkins, 2003 – 2014): Besides their applicability to mathematical analysis of a system that undergoes a leaking process, homogeneous linear equations are extensively utilized in modelling equations

Custom Term Papers: Hamlet †is Polonius a Main Character? :: The Tragedy of Hamlet

Hamlet – is Polonius a Main Character?      Ã‚  Ã‚   That Polonius, father of Laertes and Ophelia in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, is a character of considerable importance is accepted as true by most literary critics. This essay will develop the notion of his vital importance to the drama.    Ruth Nevo in her essay, â€Å"Acts III and IV: Problems of Text and Staging,† states the importance of Polonius to the hero’s evolution in the play on the occasion of Ophelia’s decoying the hero for the sake of observation by Claudius and Polonius:    But it should be noted that we actually need no further explanation for Hamlet’s sudden â€Å"Where’s your father?† than the fact that he has not recently been permitted her presence unchaperoned, if at all. And his apparent change of mood at that point in the scene might well be attributed to recollected angry resentment at Polonius’ interference in his affairs. Indeed, this would seem to be born out by the diatribe on calumny – he being calumniated and exposed by his courtship of Ophelia to the insulting aspersions of such as Polonius. I am inclined to believe that the deeper dramatic purpose of the scene is obscured if Hamlet is made or becomes aware of Polonius at any point in the scene. For if Hamlet knows that Polonius is behind the arras, then he knows that Ophelia is lying when she tells him her father is at home [. . .]. (49)    In the Introduction to Twentieth Century Interpretations of Hamlet, David Bevington presents Polonius as similar to Hamlet in various ways:    Polonius, his [Hamlet’s] seeming opposite in so many ways, is, like Hamlet, an inveterate punster. To whom else but Polonius should Hamlet direct the taunt of â€Å"Words, words, words†? The aged counselor recalls that in his youth he â€Å"suffered much extremity for love, very near this,† and he has been an actor at the university. Polonius too has advice for the players: â€Å"Seneca cannot be too heavy, nor Plautus too light.† When Hamlet jibes at â€Å"so capital a calf† enacting Julius Caesar, killed in the Capitol, he reinforces the parallel to his own playacting and anticipates the slaying of Polonius behind the arras. (4)    Polonius’ entry into the play occurs at the social get-together of the royal court. Claudius has already been crowned; Queen Gertrude is there; Hamlet is present in the black clothes of mourning.

Academic Integrity Essay

1.) The Importance of writing in both academically and professionally is that you are communicating and/or expressing ideas through both of them. There is a lot of jobs that will require writing skills because you need to know how to communicate through paper. Having good academic writing skills will even do you good when you are a student. Developing good academic writing skills has many advantages beyond obtaining higher grades. Professional writing involves using clear language to explain themselves to an audience. 2.) Integrity is important in writing because you should be honest to yourself and other people whom you are writing to. I believe that being in an online class helps you understand what integrity is and helps you be honest to people while you are opening up to them. For example in our discussion questions I feel like being honest is very important because it will keep my conversation going without any lies, it would be very e to be caught lying to someone while we are having a conversation. That is why it is important to have integrity. 3.) The easiest way to avoid plagiarism is by using your own words. Once someone understands what plagiarism is and the consequences for doing it they will understand it much better. Quotations must be used when the paragraph is about 40 words or 3 sentences long. Like I said in my first sentence using your own words is the best way to avoid plagiarism is to use paraphrase. Paraphrasing means you should put the ideas in a passage into your own words, usually following the order in which the ideas were presented in the original paper.

Level Up, Relationship Down - 1402 Words

Level Up, Relationship Down Imagine having a door shut in your face. That is how it feels when someone ignores you as that person is playing video game. You are on your way home after a long and difficult day at work. The traffic slows you down and adds up the stress to your already-worn-out body. As you are nearing your home, you notice that the lights in your home are on and you realize that you have a family to come home to and you are grateful for it. You immediately feel relieved because you know that a quality conversation with your children and/or other family member will ease the stress and pain that you are experiencing. Therefore then, you park your car on the driveway and rush yourself into the house, expecting that warm welcome†¦show more content†¦However, how does the advancement of video games affect our relationships with one another? While a group of people strongly believe that it is helping bring people together, the addiction, the over competitiveness mentality, and the frustration t hat video games generate are, in reality, pushing people apart. Video games are addictive. It makes its users forget themselves and their surroundings, including their loved ones. What makes people addicted to video games is the fact that video games are constantly rewarding people for every little in-game act they do when playing the game. For instance, one gains virtual currency or skill points for every point, rebounds, blocks, and steals one records in the game NBA 2K. Another example, one gains money and reputation points every time one finish a mission in the game Grand Theft Auto. The constant rewards are a type of positive reinforcement that people do not easily receive in real life and this makes people want to keep playing the games over and over again: â€Å"The addition of a stimulus [will] increase the probability that a behavior will be repeated† (Grison 212). In this instance, the addition of a stimulus is the rewards (virtual currency or reputation points) that video games give to its users and the behavior that is expected to be repeated is the act of playing that video games. In an article for the video-game-addiction.org, Meghan Vivo, the Content Media Relations Director at Elements Behavioral Health,
